Vinayaka Chavithi and Its Importance
Vinayaka Chavithi, also known as Ganesh Chaturthi, marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the god of new beginnings. On this day, families offer special dishes like Kudumulu and Undrallu as Naivedyam to please the deity. It's a day of devotion, prayers, and delightful food offerings.
Procedure
Step 1: Preparing the Water and Jaggery Mixture
Begin by heating 250ml of water in a pan. At the same time, take 1 cup of jaggery and boil it with 100ml water until the jaggery is fully dissolved. As the sweet aroma of jaggery fills the kitchen, it's a reminder of the blessings we seek from Lord Ganesha's sweetness and joy in life.
Step 2: Cooking the Rice Flour
Now, take 1/2 cup of rice flour and mix it with 125ml of water in a separate bowl. Once the water starts to boil, add this rice flour mixture gradually while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Let it cook for 3-4 minutes on medium flame. This step is crucial as it thickens the mixture, bringing together the elements of simplicity and purity in the offering.
Step 3: Mixing the Dough
Place 3 cups of rice flour on a wide plate. Now, add the cooked rice flour mixture and give it a gentle mix. The warmth of the mixture symbolizes the warmth of our devotion to Lord Ganesha.
Step 4: Incorporating the Jaggery
Now, it's time to pour the melted jaggery mixture into the flour mix. Slowly knead the mixture into a smooth dough. The jaggery adds sweetness, just as Lord Ganesha blesses us with joy and prosperity.
Step 5: Preparing the Idli Plates
Before shaping the Kudumulu, apply a little ghee to the idli plates. Ghee not only prevents sticking but also adds a divine fragrance, reminding us of the sacredness of the food we prepare.
Step 6: Shaping and Steaming
Take small portions of the dough and gently press them into shapes with your fingers, as shown in the accompanying image. This is a meditative process, where each Kudumulu is crafted with love and devotion. Place them on the greased plates and steam them in an idli maker for 10 minutes on high flame and another 10 minutes on low flame.
As the Kudumulu steam, the kitchen fills with the aroma of jaggery and rice, evoking a sense of peace and festivity. When done, the Kudumulu will be soft, smooth, and ready to be offered as Naivedyam to Lord Ganesha.
